OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A Newcastle man who lost an arm in a freak traffic accident is back in critical condition at an Oklahoma City hospital.

Officials at OU Medical Center say Michael Whitaker had been improving until yesterday and his condition is being downgraded to critical.

Whitaker was driving on a McClain County road last Thursday with his arm hanging out the car window when it got caught in the bumper of a tractor-trailer rig.

The arm was recovered by another driver but doctors were not able to reattach it.
