BRISTOW, Okla. (AP) -- A Bristow woman will receive one of the nation's most prestigious anti-animal cruelty awards next month in New York.
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will bestow its Henry Bergh Award on Ruth Steinberger, who is being recognized for her work establishing spaying and neutering clinics through the state.
Steinberger was on a camping trip in southern Oklahoma in 1998 when she noticed numerous stray dogs hanging around a gas station.
With help from the Humane Association of Lamar County in Paris, Texas, Steinberger won grants for animal programs in southern Oklahoma.
She co-founded Spay Oklahoma, and now about 14,000 spay or neuter surgeries are performed each year for pets belonging to low-income families.
