NEW YORK (AP) Yankees pitcher Randy Johnson will need surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back that hampered him at the end of the season.

The 43 year old Johnson was 17-11 this season with a 5.00 earned run average in 33 starts. He was the losing pitcher in Game 3 in the first round of the playoffs with Detroit after giving up 5 runs in 5 2-3 innings.
