OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- State auditor and Inspector Jeff McMahan is calling for a statewide investigation of the use of credit cards by state agencies.

In a letter to Attorney General Drew Edmondson, McMahan said he believes detailed investigative audits are needed because of problems he uncovered in an audit of state employee use of purchase cards. These are similar to credit cards and are used by state workers for individual work-related purchases.

He says millions of dollars are being spent with little or no oversight or approval.

McMahan says he has found violations of state purchasing laws and potentially illegal destruction of credit card records. There are missing receipts for credit card expenditures and questionable purchases for food, gasoline, travel claims, Christmas decorations and other items.

Auditors also found state workers shopping at places like Saks Fifth Avenue, pawn shops and video stores.
