The rush of whitewater comes to Tulsa as a new river development gives boaters a big boost.

Kayakers ran the chute as onlookers cheered Tuesday afternoon at the dedication of the Tulsa Wave Park. The rapids have attracted boaters for decades, but access was difficult.

As its centennial gift to the city, PSO graded a steep slope and built a trail so kayakers could safely launch at the bottom. PSO’s Stan Whiteford: “the RiverParks trail is here, the water is here, it was just connecting the two that was the issue and now we've been able to do that."

Boaters say the run is comparable to other major whitewater attractions around the country.

Developers say it will bring tourism to Tulsa.
