OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A road safety group is pushing for a nationwide half-cent gas tax to fund improved drivers education programs.
Transportation officials from across the country are meeting in Oklahoma City as part of highway safety conference.
The not-for-profit National Road Safety Foundation says that at a cost of about 20 cents a month for the average motorist, drivers education programs could be beefed up at high schools. Many schools have cut these programs.
The group says this enhanced training could save hundreds of lives a year.
