An Oklahoma senator introduces a bill to name the post office in Commerce after its most well-known product.
Senator Jim Inhofe said yesterday baseball legend Mickey Mantle emulates the Oklahoma spirit of hard work, charity and sportsmanship.
Mantle was born in Spavinaw but grew up in Commerce. He went on to play center field for the New York Yankees, finishing his 18 year career with 536 home runs and a .298 batting average.
He died in 1995.
Inhofe says Mantle is still known to Commerce by the nicknames "Commerce Comet'' and "Commerce Kid.''
