Special session on gasoline tax reprieve still up in air

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Governor Brad Henry says his office is still trying to determine if it's legal to suspend fuel taxes for the final three months of the year.

Democratic state Senate President Pro Tem Mike Morgan announced the plan at a news conference last Thursday. He says it could save consumers 17 cents a gallon during a time of skyrocketing prices.

But, Henry, Morgan and other key leaders have yet to talk to each other about the proposed measure.

Spokesman for Republican state House Speaker Todd Hiett, Damon Gardenhire says the speaker also hasn't talked to Senate Democrats' about their proposal.

Hiett initially responded that he's always willing to consider tax relief for Oklahomans.

For lawmakers to act, Henry would have to expand his current special session call and Hiett would have to agree to bring state House members back to the Capitol.
