Proponents of a higher tax to help pay for road and bridge repair could not have picked a worse time to put the question before voters.
The latest Oklahoma Poll from The News on 6 and the Tulsa World shows even less public support for the tax, than when we asked the question in June. 75 percent of likely voters statewide, now say they plan to vote "against" the fuel tax increase. That's almost a 20 percent decline in support since June, when we asked the same question.
An aggressive advertising campaign in support of the tax has apparently not been able to counteract the effect of rapidly rising gas prices.
And voter turnout should be heavy when the question appears on the ballot September 13th. 90% of the likely voters we surveyed statewide say they plan to vote.
