OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Attorney General Drew Edmondson is warning Oklahomans to be careful when donating money for hurricane relief efforts.
Edmondson says scam artists try to take advantage of charitable intentions following disasters. He says it happened following the Oklahoma City bombing, the May 1999 tornadoes and the September 11th terrorist attacks.
Edmondson advises to give directly to a charity; beware of appeals based on emotion instead of facts; and don't be pressured into donating.
And check with the secretary of state's office to find out if a charity is registered to solicit donations in the Sooner State.
