OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Oklahoma City police say an 11-year-old girl who has never been to school and didn't even know her last name is now in protective custody.

Sergeant Greg Giltner says the girl was found inside a dark, dirty apartment in southwest Oklahoma City, sitting on a dirty mattress and watching television.

Giltner says the girl's mother is mentally ill and claims she was home-schooling the girl, but no teaching materials were found.
