Much of the housing expansion around Tulsa in recent years has been literally "around" Tulsa - Owasso, Broken Arrow, Jenks.
But The News on 6's Rick Wells has found a renovation project in North Tulsa that has gotten the home owners some national attention.
Kevin Thompson and Mike Berglund bought this house in Brady Heights in April of last year. It was a mess. Some roof and plumbing leaks had left their mark. Walls were water stained and the ceilings were falling in. But there was something about this old house.
Kevin Thompson: "I don't know it was like running into an old friend you haven't seen in a long time..."
They thought about it for a few months then they took it on.
Mike Berglund: "There are so many things I didn't know about home construction or home repair or tools, if I hadn't done this, I knew nothing... nothing."
The walls and ceilings had to be replaced. They redid the kitchen and there under the old linoleum floor, they found a nice surprise.
Mike Berglund: "The pine floor under the linoleum was a great find 'cause we didn't expect to find anything under there that was useable."
Behind a wall upstairs they found an old fireplace. They plan to leave it just like it is. The bathroom is a favorite room. Maybe because of the claw foot tub, or the sinks, or the tile floor they had to lay twice.
The two touched up an oil painting by the wife of the architect who built this house back in 1915. It had been lost in the basement, but is now back home above the fireplace.
More than a year's work done and plenty more to do, but no second thoughts about their move to North Tulsa.
Kevin Thompson: "Brady Heights is a good place to be."
The project will be featured on "Generation Renovation" on HGTV later this year
