OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Local officials say they're concerned continued high ozone readings could lead to stiff economic penalties for Oklahoma.

It would take several years of high readings to bring penalties like higher-priced gasoline and strict vehicle inspections.

But officials with the Association of Central Oklahoma Governments say such penalties would take a heavy toll on the local economy.

Only two ozone alerts were issued last year in Oklahoma City, but nine alerts already have been issued so far this year. And the peak season for ozone is generally in August.

To combat high ozone, Oklahomans are urged to gas up vehicles at night and avoid mowing the lawn when there is a clean air alert. Avoiding drive-through windows, walking or riding a bicycle when possible and carpooling also are suggested.
