The Sapulpa Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its own. This after an officer and his father, who was riding on the patrol were killed in a traffic accident late Saturday near state Highway 66 and Hilton Road.

Sapulpa Police say patrolman Larry Cantrell was responding to a burglary call, when another car came out into the intersection. Cantrell swerved to avoid hitting the car and lost control. Cantrell was ejected from the car.

He was flown by helicopter to a Tulsa hospital, where he died. Officer Cantrell's father, Charles, was also in the patrol car. He was participating in the department's ride along program. He died at the scene.

The whole department is taking the loss pretty hard. Sapulpa Police Sgt Mike Haefner: "he was a very good officer. He was new, but he was well-liked. He was out doing his job and he was good about being there and doing his job. He really enjoyed being a police officer. And he will be sorely missed by this community and this department."

The accident is under investigation and no one has been arrested.
