TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- Two men are charged with looting a home recently purchased by the state.

The home was one of 38 earmarked for demolition as part of a program to get children out of the lead-contaminated Tar Creek Superfund Site in northeastern Oklahoma.

Gene Snow and Theodore Freeman have each been charged in Ottawa County district court with attempted petty larceny.

Theodore Freeman is the brother of Picher Mayor Sam Freeman.

Picher police report that residents stopped two men who were unhooking a central air conditioning unit outside one of the homes July 14th.

Police say the men said they had been given permission by the mayor to take the unit which is valued at $4,200.

Authorities say so far this is the only confirmed case of looting.
