The heat wave blasting through the Midwest has claimed the lives of two Oklahomans. It's also keeping emergency crews busy answering heat related calls.

6 in the Morning reporter Omar Villafranca says the medical examiner says 62-year old Oklahoma City resident Harold Byrd and 80-year old Mary Hoehman of Ada both died from hyperthermia or overheating. Both the victims were found outdoors in the heat.

Weekend temperatures in Oklahoma have hovered or exceeded triple digits for days and the heat index makes it even hotter.

Monday's high in Tulsa was 100 degrees, but at about 3 PM it felt like it was 105 degrees. The spike in temperatures means more work for emergency crews. Almost a dozen Tulsa residents were taken to local hospitals over the weekend for heat related conditions.

The American Red Cross has some tips for older residents and those working outside in the heat. First, dress for the heat. Put a hat on and wear some short sleeve clothing. Avoid dark colors if you can. Also, drink water, even if you don't feel thirsty. Keep yourself hydrated.

Avoid strenuous activity, but if you have to, do it during the cooler parts of the day, like early in the morning. And if you can stay indoors, do it. Finally, take regular breaks and find a shady spot or cool area.

These steps should help you avoid heat related problems and keep you from becoming a victim.
