This latest child death in a hot car in Durant could have been prevented if the child's daycare had called to find out why the baby wasn't dropped off.

It's a state requirement for larger daycare providers, like one in Tulsa. Dayschools of Oklahoma has a policy of calling parents of children who are absent. Any day care provider licensed for 17 children, or more, is required to make the call, but the state has no way of knowing if that actually happens, so it's up to parents to make sure.

Catherine Woldridge with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services: "And all parents need to make sure and ask their day care, what procedure do you have in place if my child doesn't show up?"

For smaller providers, especially the home day care, calling isn't a requirement.

Officials say the most important thing is for parents to check the car and make sure all your children are safe.
