OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A new federal law is expected to add to both the cost and time spent getting a driver's license.

Signed by President Bush in May, the Real ID Act sets uniform standards for state-issued driver's licenses. Among the standards are proof the applicant is in the United States lawfully and high-tech security features to prevent fraud.

Supporters say the changes will prevent terrorists from traveling freely.

But opponents call the new law another expensive and unfunded federal mandate.

Waits of one or two hours already are common at Oklahoma licensing exam stations, especially during the summer and spring break, when students are out of school.
