When the BTK killer in Wichita confessed to killing 10 people, one of his most startling revelations was how easily he talked his way into his victims' homes.

Knowing what to do when a stranger knocks, could save your life. First, don't open the door, talk through it. Insist on seeing ID, and then call the company to verify the person is supposed to be there. Once inside, don't turn your back on them and notify someone what time the person is supposed to be there and when they're expected to leave. People often fall victim because they don't trust their instincts.

Tulsa Police officer Angie Scott: "I think when we're children, we have good instincts. They always say you can tell a person's character by how dogs and children respond. But as we get older, we become more polite. So, always trust your guy instincts."

Don't schedule appointments at your home when you're going to be alone and stay on the phone while in the presence of a stranger.
