GM plant in Oklahoma City resumes operations

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- The General Motors plant in Oklahoma City is resuming production after three weeks of scheduled down time and employees say they're confident about the plant's future.

Speculation about the plant's future began after GM announced earlier this month it will close plants and eliminate about 25,000 jobs by 2008. Industry analysts speculated that the Oklahoma City plant could be at risk of closing because sales of the autos made there are dropping.

But a letter to union members from the United Auto Workers Local says union leaders have not been told of any plans to close the Oklahoma City plant. And GM spokeswoman Nancy Sarpolis says the company plans to add some overtime hours to the Oklahoma City plant beginning in August.

The plant has about 2,400 employees who assemble versions of the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, the GMC Envoy and the Isuzu Ascender.
