After only five months, Oklahoma has already exceeded the average number of rabies cases reported in a full year.
The state normally has about 40 cases a year. There have already been 48 cases this year.
Most of the problem is in central and western Oklahoma, where the biggest threat is from skunks. Officials say the disease is cyclical. Last year, 112 cases were reported. And there were more than 200 cases the year before.
Veterinarians are urging residents to update animal vaccinations.
