OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Some Republican lawmakers say a special session may be needed to enact a meaningful workers' compensation reform bill.

Legislators says getting a measure passed in the final days of the Legislature may not be possible.

House Speaker Todd Hiett made workers' compensation reform his Number One legislative goal.

He says he is still hopeful but is beginning to wonder whether a significant measure can be passed before Friday's 5 PM deadline to adjourn.

Under the workers' compensation system, employers are required to carry insurance to cover their employees in case of injuries suffered on the job.

Sponsors of changes in the system say rates are so high in Oklahoma that they discourage businesses from coming to the state and existing businesses from expanding.
