The city has a groundbreaking program for Tulsa city workers. A new benefit package could help the city's nearly 4,000 employees own homes, some for the first time.
News on 6 anchor Scott Thompson says the City of Tulsa is the first employer in the state to offer this kind of home ownership incentive and quite possibly the first city in the country to have this kind of plan for municipal workers.
Monica Hamilton works at city hall, scheduling appointments for Mayor Bill LaFortune. She's been on board for three years, but she still lives in an apartment with her 13-year-old daughter.
With these new home buying incentives, Hamilton can get help with the down payment and secure a more flexible mortgage. “With all the things that we've gone through, the budget buts, the losses in benefits, it's something that's going to be a morale booster. It's just something that's going to be great for city employees, and already we've been hearing a lot of people say that they're going to take advantage of it."
Monica Hamilton says this program comes just in time. She's looking to buy a house in August.
