The mother of a ministry is remembered in south Tulsa. Evelyn Roberts - wife of evangelist Oral Roberts - was honored Monday at a service on the ORU campus.
Evelyn died last week in California at the age of 88, but for years, she was the motherly face of the worldwide ministry her husband founded. News on 6 anchor Scott Thompson says hundreds of ORU students, alumni, and friends of the Roberts family filled the Mabee Center to pay tribute to the woman Oral Roberts' called his "darling wife."
Oral Roberts and his children emphasized that Monday afternoon's service was not to grieve Evelyn's death, but to celebrate her life, especially the years she spent by her husband's side as he took his spiritual message around the world.
Speakers at Monday's service made it clear how much Evelyn was loved, both by her family and by the students at Oral Roberts University. The Roberts family said it is very hard to say goodbye to a woman who meant so much.
Oral Roberts: "And I need more help yet, because I'm not quite through the grief stage. It'll take me a little while."
Richard Roberts: "It's OK to cry. God put that in us, but it's also OK to be happy, and sometimes in the same sentence."
Oral Roberts says the week since his wife's death has re-energized his mission to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ.
