HUGO, Okla. (AP) -- The body of a Hugo High School student who died after collapsing while playing basketball has been sent to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy.

Jrmario Mitchell, 17, died about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, less than two hours after he lost consciousness while playing a basketball game in the Hugo Middle School gymnasium.

Coaches Darnell Shanklin and Chris Scott performed CPR on the high school junior before emergency medics arrived. Mitchell was pronounced dead at Choctaw Memorial Hospital.

Kelly Self, activities and programs director for the district, said the district has lost a family member and the entire student body has been affected.

"He was just wonderful. It's one of those things that's in control of somebody more powerful than us," Self said.

Counselors and religious volunteers have been available to students, High School Principal Doyle Patterson said.

"We've pulled together as a small community," Patterson said. "He was a great kid. We're all going to miss him."

Mitchell's funeral is scheduled for May 14, Self said.
