Your daily commute looks a little different if you use US highway 75.

A detour has closed the 71st Street exit off the highway and drivers should expect delays. 6 in the Morning reporter Omar Villafranca says highway 75 could get a little messy now that the 71st Street exit is fully closed off. The exit ramps are shut down.

If you normally exit 71st Street you have two options. You can exit 61st Street or 81st Street to get where you need to go. Also, the 71st Street bridge over US highway 75 will be closed. Just a note, there have been dozens of wrecks on 61st Street. Parts of the road are very narrow.

State Transportation officials are encouraging drivers to use the 81st Street exit. Traffic has been diverted from the main construction area to demolish and rebuild the bridge over highway 75.

When the project is finished, there will be new on and off ramps with more lanes and a new bridge.

Now for the bad news, the detour will last about 6 months and the construction will finish up a little more than a year from now, but the state says when it's finished, it'll make your commute easier.
