On March 1st, schools all across the state were "on" the march to fight methamphetamine.
The March Against Meth was designed to warn kids of the dangers of the drug and to honor the officers who have lost their lives while trying to stop it.
News on 6 reporter Steve Berg was at the Liberty-Mounds School Wednesday morning, where one teacher understands that sacrifice more than most. "Remember, it's easier to stay out of trouble than it is to get out of trouble." Renee Lee teaches computers at Liberty Mounds School. She probably wishes there was a program or formula to keep kids away from meth, but there's not "Meth is very prominent out here, I know that. Just to show these kids that somebody cares, that all these people that showed up today care about their well-being."
One man who couldn't be at Liberty-Mounds School on Wednesday and who cared a lot about fighting drugs was Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper Nick Green. He was shot and killed while trying to arrest a meth-lab suspect in western Oklahoma in 2003. "Nick was a friend of mine, he was an officer with my husband in the Guthrie Police Department. Nick was a tremendous person. He had a heart of gold, just to be able to do this in his honor, it really came from my heart. He meant a lot to me and a lot to my husband."
Wednesday, the kids were all encouraged to wear green in Nick Green's honor. They didn't know him, but Renee Lee thinks they know why it was important to remember him and important to fight against methamphetamine. Just the fact that the kids were paying attention and the fact they wore the green for Nikky Green, I don't think we've seen this kind of participation in anything, I think it turned out really well."
