OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- January is National Stalking Awareness Month, and state officials are urging Oklahomans to be aware of the crime that can have a fatal ending.
Attorney General Drew Edmondson says many victims think they can simply ignore their stalker and the problem will go away. But he says it's important for stalking victims to seek help immediately.
January was named National Stalking Awareness Month by Congress in 2003 after the death of a New Mexico woman who was murdered after being stalked for months by an ex-boyfriend.
According to the National Institute of Justice, 1.4-million people are stalked every year in the United States.
