OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Hurricane Katrina and Rita evacuees now have an additional 60 days to apply for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
FEMA officials are encouraging families to apply as soon as possible.
They say the extension from January 11 to March 11 was granted to assure everyone eligible for assistance has registered.
FEMA says sometimes people don't register because they have home insurance and don't think they're eligible.
Evacuees who have not registered for assistance should call the toll- free registration line, at (800) 621-FEMA. The line is open 24 hours.
