OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ About 9,600 Oklahoma veterans are exempt from paying sales taxes, thanks to a new state law.
The law went into effect on July 1st. But confusion among some merchants is preventing veterans from enjoying the benefits.
Norman Youngblood, a disabled veteran of Korea and Vietnam, says he had trouble using his state veterans exemption card at an Oklahoma City restaurant. The problem has since been worked out.
Tax Commission spokeswoman Paul Ross says such misunderstandings were common when the program was launched. Ross says it's possible that some merchants still won't accept the veterans cards.
She says there's nothing in the law that requires merchants to honor the cards. If a card is rejected, a veteran can request a sales tax refund from the state.
