Owasso is an old Indian word that means "The End", but there's seemingly no end to the growth in Owasso.
As News on 6 business reporter Steve Berg tells us, there's another big shopping center in the works. "Everything is just unbelievable change, this used to be the country." Susan Frazier routinely drives from Skiatook to Owasso to go shopping, but there's nothing routine about the recent development. "I got to church over here and there's just unbelievable changes as far as what's happening and how fast it's growing up and so many different malls and different stores and things like that."
She's shopping at the brand-new, 500,000 square-foot Smith Farm Center and just up the road on US highway 169 and Highway 20 or 116th Street North another new "600,000 square foot shopping center called Garrett Creek will be going in during the next 6 months, although they'll be aiming for a laid-back feel.
"It's going to be a lifestyle center. The overall center is combined with a residential complex and there will be walking trails and parks in there." Developer Alan Blaksley says they'll have restaurants, retail, and a theater. He says they're looking for things like Best Buy and Barnes and Noble type stores.
He says Owasso is ripe for any kind of big chain that it doesn't have already. This area is a prime crossroads between Claremore to the east, Tulsa to the south and Collinsville to the north. There's also Skiatook which is northwest of Owasso, and at one time or another, all those people funnel through this area. "Some of the demographics that's been done by some of the local retail people in the area has taken the numbers all the way to north of Coffeyville, Kansas as far as retail customers that are coming into our area."
And they can't wait to see what comes next. Susan Frazier: "It's from week to week, it's something different, it's unbelievable. We get so excited to see a new store going on, especially all the females, we enjoy that."
