Even though dogs are said to be man's best friend, not every dog is best for every situation. Finding out about the peculiarities of the different breeds is the purpose of a big get-together Saturday morning.
News on 6 reporter Rick Wells says some dogs have gotten together to show off a little, to help us learn more about their good points and their shortcomings.
Joyce Aston: "If you have a small backyard you don't want one of these dogs." Poe is a Border collie, by nature they are herding dogs, you've got to keep them busy.
Jan Logan: "She 121 pounds, Maggie she's a Bull Mastiff.†But look at her just sit there, a gentle giant. Jan Logan has two of these, she says they are wonderfully gentle but they are bigger than she is, they've got to have training. Jan Logan: "It's too much dog without obedience training." Maggie is a therapy dog, works in hospitals and nursing homes.
That's why Southern Agriculture and the Tulsa Dog Training Club are holding a meet and greet fair. Sam Cudek: "We try to help people find the best dog for their lifestyle." They are bringing together 50 different breeds and their owners.
There will be German Shepherds and Labs, and Westy's perfect size for little kids. Meredith Butcher: "They are nice family dogs, but not good with little bitty kids." Ruby Sue is an Australian Shepherd, which by the way didn't come from Australia, wonderful dogs, perfect size but can have joint problems, you need to know that.
And not all Dalmatians are like the ones you see in the movies. Lawanna Smith: "They bark, they dig, they do all the things dogs do."
The big meet and greet fair is Saturday from 9 AM to 1 PM at Southern Agriculture At 91st and Delaware. For information call them at 299-1981.
