OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Three Oklahoma universities have teamed up to conduct transportation-related research projects.

The new consortium -- made up of the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Langston University -- puts the schools in line for $16-million in federal funds over five years.

Oklahoma Senator Jim Inhofe says Oklahoma is one of only ten states selected for a transportation research center.

Neal McCaleb, former state transportation secretary, is the consortium's interim director. McCaleb says matching funds will be sought from other government and private sources.

Inhofe says Oklahoma was a natural place for a center because of its "crossroads" location.

Governor Brad Henry says the center will be a plus in his goal to make Oklahoma "the research capital of the Plains."
