OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A pit bull terrier attacks a 12-year-old Oklahoma City boy and later tries to attack police before it is caught.

The attack Sunday morning left the boy, whom authorities did not identify, in a local hospital. An Emergency Medical Service Authority spokeswoman says the boy was in good condition when he was hospitalized.

Animal Welfare officer Steve Dowdy says the dog's attack was not provoked.

A man jumped out of a pickup and scared away the dog, but when police arrived, the dog tried to attack the officers.

Oklahoma City Police Lieutenant Jeff Treat says one officer fired three shots at the dog and scared it away again.

The dog's owners later gave the animal to authorities to observe. Dowdy says the owners were issued citations for violating city animal ordinances.
