OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Oklahoma foster parents will receive an extra $1 per day beginning next month to care for abused and neglected children.
The increase is the largest in more than 20 years, but the amount remains below what the US Agriculture Department says it costs to raise a child.
The increase goes into effect September 1st.
In Oklahoma, foster parents of children from birth to two years old get about $12 a day. The USDA estimates the cost to raise a child that age is about $20 a day.
As of May, more than 7,700 children were in the foster care system in Oklahoma.
