WASHINGTON (AP) _ It likely is no surprise to Oklahomans that the first half of the year set a record for average high temperatures.

The federal government says the first half of the year was the warmest on record for the entire United States.

And record warm temperatures were seen in Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri.

The government report says the average temperature for the 48 contiguous United States from January through June was 51.8 degrees Fahrenheit, or 3.4 degrees above average for the 20th century.

And worldwide this is the sixth warmest year-to-date since record keeping began in 1880.
