A Tulsa north side community was reborn Friday. Folks in the Northgate neighborhood broke ground on their first new home in 30 years.
News on 6 anchor Scott Thompson explains how an entire community made it happen. It took a partnership between the city and the Northgate Neighborhood Association, plus the help of some very giving organizations.
Pastor Warren Blakney and the North Peoria Church of Christ donated the land for the new home at 62nd Street North and Denver. The Housing Partners of Tulsa will be responsible for seeing the project through.
Together with Northgate residents, the groups grabbed shovels and broke ground Friday. Neighbors say this is just the first step in bringing families, businesses, and tax dollars back to Northgate. Dr Warren Blakney: "This has been a depressed community, and to see it revitalized, and to see those dollars come from this community and reinvest in this community, it's going to help community pride as well. It's going to help us all."
Tulsa Mayor Kathy Taylor: "We've cut crime in this area by 30 percent. That's really a result of a partnership with the police, the neighborhoods just getting together, saying this is what we want to see happen in our neighborhood."
They say after this home, the businesses follow. The neighborhood is already buzzing about rumors a grocery store may soon be moving in.
