One of the most anticipated sports cars to go on sale this summer made its street debut in Tulsa Thursday night.

For the first time, a production ready version of the Shelby GT-500 has been driven on the street, this time with News on 6 anchor Lori Fullbright behind the wheel.

It's got a supercharged 5.4 liter, V8 under the hood, 480 pound-feet of torque; it can do 0 to 60 in 4.5-seconds and 0 to 100 in 9.6. Of course, I didn't drive it that fast, yet, because I was leading a procession of hundreds of classic Mustangs from south Tulsa to Brookside.

The Mustang Shelby is such a popular car; it has 40,000 thousand members in its fan club. That's why car lovers lined up to follow the Shelby GT-500 on its maiden drive on a public street.

The 500's appearance coincides with Tulsa's Mid-America Ford Performance and Shelby meet, an event that draws people from all over.

The new Shelby GT 500 certainly has the wow factor and its base price is $41,900. Bob Adams with Ford: "It's not super high priced and exotic that you can't drive it or afford it. It's a car you get in and drive as a daily car and take it to the race track on the weekend." That's exactly what legendary race car driver and designer Carroll Shelby was all about in the 60's when he was making his cars.

This latest design takes the Mustang to a totally different level. Ford plans to make 8,000 or 9,000 this year and next and then, see after that.

Motor Trend magazine calls it the greatest Mustang ever.

You can see the 2007 Ford Shelby GT 500 Mustang Friday at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit in Jennings. Saturday it will be at the Tulsa Raceway Park on North Garnett Road. And Sunday, it will be at Tulsa's Marriott Southern Hills Hotel.
