Tulsa Mayor Kathy Taylor wants residents to get to know their neighbors. She's hosting several meetings in different neighborhoods, and the first meeting is Tuesday night.
Mayor Taylor and the city council hope neighbors will get to know each other's names and faces. City leaders say when neighbors talk; it builds stronger and safer communities.
Bill and Lindsay Wagoner met with their east Tulsa neighborhood last month. Their little girl Elizabeth was killed earlier this year. Daniel Johnson lived in the neighborhood and now faces first degree murder and kidnapping charges. Elizabeth Wagoner's family say had they known their neighbors, Elizabeth might be alive today.
City leaders say an event like this is the first step to making an area safer. Anna America with the Tulsa Mayor's office:" We don't have the money, but if we did have the money to go out and double our police force and do this, that's not going to do anything if you don't have the people in the community participating, looking out for each other, looking out for themselves and working with the city.â€
Each city council district will have a neighborfest event. City council district 1's event is Tuesday at Lacy Park at 2314 North Madison Place. It runs from 6 to 8 PM.
The City of Tulsa will provide free snacks, but are asking residents to bring a picnic item to share.
If you have any questions about the future events, you can call the Mayor's Action line at 596-2100.
