An Ada couple is living a nightmare, after a truck crashed into their bedroom in the middle of the night. The woman was injured and her husband is now in critical condition fighting for his life.
As News on 6 reporter Charles Bassett explains, the driver didn't stick around to see if anyone was hurt.
Home sweet home will never be the same for Rebecca Fleming. The walls ripped apart, debris litters the ground. “All I remember is looking up and seeing my husband in the floor covered in blood moaning and holding his right shoulder and arm and his head was laid open.†Inside the bedroom, it looks like a bomb went off.
Last month, Fleming and her husband Larry were asleep when a truck came speeding through an intersection in front of the home. The truck came across the lawn and then crashed into the bedroom. Rebecca got a concussion and some bruises, but is doing okay. Larry Fleming has 167 stitches in his head, a crushed shoulder, a broken arm and his back is broken in several places.
After the crash, the driver, 21-year old August Peters backed up and sped away. The truck and Peters were found at a nearby trailer park. Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper Keith Teel: “he appeared to be intoxicated. He stated that he had been drinking quite a bit before they took off in the vehicle.â€
Teel says the truck was covered in debris from the house. You can still see plaster in the floorboard and scratches all over. Teel says Peters admitted hitting the house and driving away.
Peters faces charges for DUI and leaving the scene of an accident. The OHP says Peters has at least one prior DUI.
A fund has been set up for the Fleming family at Vision Bank in Ada. It is called the Larry Michael Fleming fund. To find out more information, call 888-332-5132.
