OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ The 56th Oklahoma Highway Patrol Academy begins today with 61 cadets reporting to the training center in Oklahoma City.
About eight months ago, 848 applicants started the hiring process that included physical examinations, a written exam, oral interviews and an extensive background check.
There are no women in this year's academy, but cadets come from a wide variety of professional backgrounds, including mechanics, teachers, firefighters and groundskeepers.
The academy is 16 weeks long and has a military structure. The cadets will live at the Robert Lester Training Center during the academy.
