Murder charge filed in Eufaula councilman's death

EUFAULA, Okla. (AP) -- A murder charge has been filed in the more than 2-year-old shooting death of Eufaula City Councilman Larry Nichols.

Richard Lopez Junior is charged with first-degree murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Nichols was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head on January 25th, 2004, when members of his church checked on him because he had missed Sunday Mass.

Authorities say Lopez was arrested and charged after an informant told police Lopez confessed to the killing during a botched robbery attempt.
