Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation computer system to come from fined company

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ A company that was fined millions of dollars for security breaches that led to large-scale identity theft is building a new crime-fighting computer system for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigations.

The state hired ChoicePoint Incorporated for $1.8 million in November to build a system allowing the OSBI and other law enforcement agencies to share information to fight terrorism.

Officials have decided to stick with the Georgia-based data company, despite the civil fine announced in January.

ChoicePoint in January agreed to pay a $10 million civil penalty and $5 million more in victim compensation to settle a case brought by federal regulators.

OSBI officials said the law enforcement agency and not ChoicePoint will have control over information put in the new system.
