MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) -- The Muskogee Phoenix newspaper will be sold by May 1 by the Gannet Company Incorporated.

Gannett bought the paper in 1977.

Phoenix Publisher Larry Corvi says the sale will be to one of five suitors, four of which are national newspaper companies.

Corvi wouldn't mention the names of the potential buyers, but says any contract of sale will require the new owner to maintain the newspaper's current employees.
