OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A sales tax holiday on back-to-school items is a step closer to reality in Oklahoma.

A state House committee Wednesday approved the bill and is sending it to the full House for consideration. The bill has already passed the state Senate.

The proposal calls for dropping the sales tax on back-to-school purchases for three days on the first weekend of each August. It's patterned after a similar law in Texas and is part of Governor Brad Henry's legislative package.

Supporters say the bill would keep Oklahomans from traveling to Texas to spend money on back-to-school items.

Opponents include city officials who say they would lose tax revenue.
