Golf Courses Prepare For Play

Hearty souls may be looking for a place to play golf this weekend. There's still considerable damage to area courses with lots of trees. The News On 6's Rick Wells reports the golf course at LaFortune Park is open, but there is clean up work still going on around those hitting the links.

The sound of a wood chipper is not the usual sound for a golf course, but in recent days it has been the typical sound for many courses.

"We had 20 people working a solid six days to get the limbs up and bad stuff out of the trees so we could get back on the golf course," said Pat McCrate with Tulsa County.

Pat McCrate is Director of Golf for Tulsa County's two courses at LaFortune Park and South Lakes in Jenks. Some courses, he says, are still struggling to get open again. LaFortune's in pretty good shape, they've dragged most of the debris to one spot.

"We've got a good 150 yards of pile here," Pat McCrate said of the debris at LaFortune.

Driving around, the course, one could see plenty of places where limbs had been. And, some broken limbs higher up will be removed with a bucket truck. The immediate plan was to make the course playable again and safe for golfers to be on.

Most of the public courses in the Tulsa area are open, despite damage. Mohawk Park is closed, but should open up nine holes this weekend. Page Belcher is partially open.
