Nowata Residents Cope With Ice & Outages

From chainsaws to hand saws, The News On 6's Dan Bewley reports the city of Nowata is a mess. Dana Sanders lives in Nowata. Sanders says it's unreal that no one was in her car when a tree fell on it Monday.

"We had just got home and we were out of the car maybe five minutes and we heard a big boom and that was it," Sanders said.

"I have lived in Oklahoma all my life, which is 65 years, and I can never remember it being this bad, said Nowata resident Jo Ann Sorenson"

Sorenson and her husband Al are two of dozens of people to take up shelter at the city's fire department. Its generator is the only one in a town without power.

"It keeps going on, going out. There are some people in the rural areas that surround Nowata that do have electricity and water," said Lucinda Akins, with the American Red Cross.

The Red Cross opened a shelter Sunday afternoon, giving the 2,700 Nowata residents a place to stay warm and get a hot meal.

Power is not expected to be restored until Wednesday.
