Twelve more COVID-19 cases reported in Oklahoma, bringing the total up to 29 cases in the state, according to the state health department on Wednesday.
As of Wednesday, 14 cases were reported in Oklahoma County, four cases in Tulsa County, four cases in Cleveland County, two cases in Canadian County, two cases in Kay County, one case in Payne County, one case in Jackson County and one case in Pawnee County.
The cases include one person ages 0 to 4, 13 people ages 18 to 49, 10 people ages 50 to 64 and five people ages 65 or older.
St. Luke's Childcare Center Downtown said the child case was a child in their infant to 1-year-old room. The child was not showing symptoms and has not been in the downtown childcare facility since Friday.
The childcare center released the following statement:
“This morning, we received a call from the Oklahoma City-County Health Department (OCCHD) informing us a child from the infant to 1-year-old room of our downtown childcare center tested positive for COVID-19. The child, who was not showing any symptoms of illness, has not been in our facility since Friday.
Following the guidance of the OCCHD, we immediately reached out to all families of children in the class. Those who were in attendance were quickly picked up and have entered a period of self-quarantine. Two teachers who work directly with the class have also placed themselves in self-quarantine, as recommended by state officials.
We also consulted with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS), who asked us to keep the rest of the downtown childcare center – as well as our other locations – open. We intend to follow DHS’ recommendation, and we will continue to apply best practices in thorough handwashing and sanitization of classrooms.
The health and safety of the children in our care is and always will be our top priority.”
One of the Kay County cases is a former nursing home resident in Ponca City, according to a spokesman for the nursing home.
The resident was discharged from the nursing home over the weekend and was taken to a local hospital after experiencing symptoms. The person is not expected to return to the nursing facility and is expected to be released from the hospital into the care of family.
One other resident was in close contact with the person who tested positive and was tested for the virus. That resident's results have not been made available as of Wednesday.
All nursing homes in Oklahoma are taking heightened precautions to protect their residents including restricting non-medically necessary visitation to the facility, ending communal dining and group activities in the facility, screening staff for fevers and symptoms of COVID-19 prior to each shift and screening current residents twice per day for symptoms.
The breakdown of cases include 13 who are female and 16 who are male.
