OKCPS Officials Hand Out Curriculum Packets As Continuous Learning Begins In Oklahoma

Distance learning began across Oklahoma on Monday, with each district taking a different approach.

Oklahoma City Public Schools is distributing curriculum both online and in-person.

Every Monday, curriculum packets are distributed at meal distribution sites during select hours.

OKCPS Superintendent Sean McDaniel oversaw the process Monday at Prairie Queen Elementary School.

“This is our return to school, if you will. Obviously, our buildings are closed, but this is our opportunity across the state to reengage with our kids,” McDaniel said.

The material at OKCPS is enrichment and review and will not be graded.

However, teachers will still be working, giving feedback to students on a daily basis through office hours.

“This is simply review and enrichment from the first three quarters. So, we have different methods kids and families can use to get to teachers,” McDaniel said.

Special instruction and activities for special needs and ESL students is also included in the OKCPS packets.

Prairie Queen Elementary Principal Lisa West said faculty has spent the past two weeks reaching out to students and families as best as possible.

“Sometimes, we don’t have numbers that work. A lot of our families don’t have the Internet so we can’t email them. So, it’s been a real challenge,” West said.

The superintendent said he doubts that will be the only challenge during this new process.

McDaniel is working on a possible volunteer delivery plan for areas where families have trouble getting to meal sites.

“The plan is beautiful on paper but as we execute the plan this week, we know we’re going to get feedback,” McDaniel said.
