In 2007 the very first escape room was opened in Japan. Now there are over 3,000 escape room venues worldwide, and more opening every day.
These rooms typically have a theme like a biohazard lab, kidnappers’ hideout, etc. Before entering your room your game host will give you a backstory about your room. After entering your room you have sixty minutes to escape.
These escape rooms have a series of puzzles and clues that need to be solved in order to move on. These can be secret messages that need to be decoded, objects to be found, or a secret door to open. These escape room puzzles can be complex but are solvable.
Here are some of the most commonly seen puzzles, and some tips to help solve them.
Some of the puzzles you’ll face are simple while others may require some thought. Here are some of the most commonly seen puzzles in these escape rooms.
Some of these puzzles may require you to decipher a message. Morse code has been seen frequently in escape rooms. But don’t worry you should find a key somewhere in your room.
There may also be hints to the message around the room, for example, you could find an envelope with colored dots. You would then look for these colors around the room, say one of the dots was red and you find a red book with a word or number. That would be part of the message you need.
Another popular puzzle is having items just out of your reach. This could be a metal key in a grate that is just out of reach or an item on a shelf out of reach. If you search your room you will most likely find a magnet or something to extend your reach.
Pro tip: keys can not be picked up by magnets but keyrings can.
These can include blacklight puzzles, that require you to shine the black light to find hidden writing. Or it can be shining a flashlight on an object to reveal a clue. These can be some of the most perplexing puzzles but can be solved with patients.
We would recommend have one person from your group test these theories while others are working in different areas.
Escape room designers love to hide clues in the pictures around the room. Do any of the paintings look off? Try looking at it from a different perspective. Or maybe even look behind the painting.
These can also be considered maps that you have to use to find your clues. For example, you may need to connect locations on the map to spell a word for another clue.
Information for your escape room puzzles may be given during the backstory so pay attention to what your game host says. There may also be extra information in the description of the game. It always pays to do your research before going in.
